The Sunrise Powerlink Community Initiatives
SDG&E is committed to being a responsible partner in the communities along the 117-mile Sunrise Powerlink route. SDG&E has implemented a comprehensive community outreach program to provide timely project information and answer community members’ questions.
Since the Sunrise Powerlink was first proposed in 2005, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), Bureau of Land Management (BLM), United States Forest Service and SDG&E have held or participated in more than 75 public meetings, and SDG&E representatives have met personally with thousands of interested citizens, all to help inform the community about the Sunrise Powerlink.
In 2010, SDG&E opened the East County Community Relations Office at 2806 Alpine Boulevard, Ste. C, Alpine, CA 91901. The office is currently staffed Monday-Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM with at least two public affairs specialists ready to answer residents’ questions. If a complaint is received, SDG&E representatives immediately respond and work to address the person’s concerns. SDG&E representatives also have visited every business on Alpine Boulevard at least three times to answer business owners’ questions about the 6.2 mile underground segment of the line in that community.
Sunrise Powerlink team members are a constant presence in communities along the route and have participated in or sponsored numerous community events. SDG&E representatives participated in the Jacumba Fall Fest in October 2010, sponsored the Mountain Empire Business Association Roundup in Campo on May 2011 and hosted the Alpine Community Safety Fair in May 2011 to name just a few.
SDG&E also created seven Community Councils representing all communities along the route to ensure ongoing, productive, two-way dialogue on the project. SDG&E held three rounds of Community Council meetings, which were open to the public.
The Councils are located in the following communities:
- Imperial Valley
- Campo
- Boulevard
- Jacumba
- Alpine
- Lakeside
- City of San Diego
SDG&E will continue to conduct a proactive outreach effort and be available to meet with any community member interested in the project.
